Criteria for an activating gym class
A project from the excellence initiative of Universität Hamburg, sponsored by Ideas and Venture Fund.
Pilot study in the RETHESIS aktiv project—the reconstruction of relevant topics and situations in an activating gym class from the point of view of participating students
Duration: March 2020–February 2021
Project description
The pilot study on “Criteria for an activating gym class” is part of the RETHESIS aktiv project (the reconstruction of relevant topics and situations in an activating sport class from the point of view of participating students) and serves as the basis for the resubmission of the accompanying German Research Foundation (DFG) proposal. The DFG proposal will examine how students experience and interpret an “activating gym class” via a reconstructive study. The objective of the preliminary study is to establish the theoretical-normative and empirical criteria of an “activating gym class” (Cf. Gaum & Krieger, 2019; Wibowo, Buekers & Krieger, 2019). To this end, information on good practice in gym class is to be collected from 3 fields and systematically compared: statements on the current status of specialized literature on sports teaching (research), educational plans for sports as a subject (document analysis), and from select gym teachers as experts (interviews). Systematically comparing the identified subject-specific aspects of good practice in gym class with lines of reasoning from current educational science teaching will provide the contours of a detailed description of an “activating gym class” as defined in subject-specific terms. In turn, this will permit systematic identification and selection of class settings for further studies on students’ view of gym class deemed up-to-date.
