Information on the Faculty of Education departments
The first full professorship for education at Universität Hamburg was filled in 1923. Following an eventful history of educational science and teacher training at Universität Hamburg, a department of education was founded in 1969 and divided into five sections, each encompassing several subject groups.
The Faculty of Education is generally organized by discipline as recommended by the German Educational Research Association (GERA). It offers specializations in general education; international and intercultural comparative education as well as psychology in education and teaching (in Department 1); school education and educational research, early childhood and primary education, social pedagogy, and special needs education (Department 2); and adult and further education, vocational education, and economics and business education (Department 3). There are individual professorships for the history of education, empirical education research, gender studies, and media education in Department 1.
One unique feature of the Faculty of Education is that, in accordance with the Hamburg Model, it offers instruction in subject-specific didactics. Department 4 is composed of subject-specific didactics for the linguistic (German, English, French, Spanish, Turkish, Russian, Latin, Greek) and the aesthetic (art, music, sports and performing arts) disciplines, while Department 5 encompasses subject-specific didactics for the social sciences (social science, history, geography, religion, philosophy), natural sciences (biology, chemistry, physics, informatics, mathematics), and general studies education.
The departments in the Faculty of Education have offered the bachelor’s degree program Bachelor of Arts in Educational Science since the winter semester 2007/08; the master’s degree program Master of Arts in Educational Science has been offered since the winter semester 2010/11. Since the introduction of the bachelor's degree, students are no longer being accepted to programs conferring a Diplom or Magister.
In addition, the departments offer the education degree component for the teacher training degree programs at Universität Hamburg. These degree programs were also converted to the tiered study system with the introduction of bachelor’s degree programs in winter semester 2007/2008, followed by the introduction in winter semester 2010/2011 of degree programs offering a Master of Education.
The building
The main building for the Faculty of Education is located at Von-Melle-Park 8. This building was designed by Paul Seitz, the urban planner and architect responsible for the overall design of the campus. In addition to the usual classrooms and offices, it also houses the Anna Siemsen Lecture Hall, the Martha Muchow Library, and the Education Media Center. Other locations include Binderstraße 34 and Sedanstraße 19. The subject groups Special Needs Education, Vocational Education, Economics and Business Education, and the Faculty’s test library are located at the latter address.
