Freemover
International students have the option of studying as Freemovers at the Faculty of Education. The Faculty of Education has very limited capacity for Freemovers. Therefore, only the application of those students who meet all requirements can be considered.
Degree programs and courses
Please first determine if your degree program or desired field of specialization with the appropriate courses is offered at the Faculty of Education. All courses for the current semester are listed on the online platform STiNE.
The majority of courses are offered in a similar format each year. Please ask your home university in advance if the courses will be recognized after your stay abroad.
A general list of the degree programs offered by the Faculty of Education is available here and here (in German only).
Informal application to the Faculty of Education
Once you are certain that your desired field of specialization and/or the needed courses are offered at the Faculty of Education, please submit an informal application.
In this application, please include the following:
- Motivation Letter, stating your purpose of stay and academic interests
- If available, proof of sufficient German language proficiency
- If available, proof of adequate health insurance coverage (you can also submit this proof after your arrival in Germany)
- Your curriculum vitae (including date and place of birth)
Your application must be sent to the International Office in the Faculty of Education. Contact: international.ew@uni-hamburg.de.
After receipt of your application, the International Office will check your paperwork and, if your application is successful, send you a letter of invitation.
Additionally, we will help you find a lecturer from the respective department to provide academic supervision for you. If the prerequisites are met, this person will issue you with a written confirmation of supervision. The confirmation of supervision will also specify the duration of your stay at University of Hamburg.
Once you have your letter of invitation and confirmation of supervision, you can enroll as a Freemover.
If you require a visa for your academic stay in Germany, the letter of invitation serves as a template for your application.

After being accepted by the Faculty of Education and receiving the necessary paperwork, you will have to submit an official enrollment application with the Campus Center of University of Hamburg.
In your application, please indicate which semester you would like to enroll for and in which degree program you would like to attend courses. Please also indicate your postal address in Germany and your email address. If you do not yet have a postal address in Germany, you can use the address of your supervising instructor at the Faculty.
