Deaf children in Scottish schools: Curriculum, Attainment and Challenges
Dr Audrey Cameron will present an overview of the education system in Scotland and thereby provide a context for understanding the current structure of educational provision for deaf children both at broad general (age 3-14) and the senior phase (14-18). She will give an outline of routes to teacher training/accreditation (including training for teachers of deaf children); key policy documents and drivers (most notably Curriculum for Excellence and the 1+2 Language Policy) and the likely impact of the British Sign Language (Scotland) 2015 Act at both a national and local level. Reference will also be made to the Scottish Government's current concerns about ‘the attainment gap’ and the attainment levels of Scottish deaf children. Dr Cameron will also offer an insight into the development of an innovative and internationally recognised BSL glossary project based at the Scottish Sensory Centre at the University of Edinburgh, which has, over the past 11 years, improved access for deaf children to STEM subjects.
The talk will be interpreted from International Sign (IS) to German Sign Language (DGS) and German.
Organization: Prof. Dr. Barbara Hänel-Faulhaber/Viktor Werner (Faculty of Education)
