On 15–16 April 2021, the anti-bias training series began for teachers in the Faculty of Education as part of the Diversity Contexts Teacher Education project. The professional development series aims to jointly develop seminar components based on an anti-bias approach for the preparatory seminar of the orientation teaching placement module. The students should prepare these as part of their school placement in diversity contexts. The first of the 2 days of training focus on dealing sensitively with differences and reflecting on one’s own experiences. The training is led by Dr. Rita Panesar and Elisabeth Wazinski from the Koordinierungsstelle Weiterbildung und Beschäftifung e.V.
Reflect and raise issues
An important part of the first of the 2 professional development days is the introduction and presentation of the anti-bias approach. How do we construct difference and what does it mean? At the same time, we compare and contrast concepts such as intercultural education or diversity education. In addition, participants reflect on their own experiences and how they deal with diversity in teaching. This engagement and critical reflection on individual ways of perceiving and understanding the world is a central building block of the anti-bias approach.
Professional development initially in digital form
In total, the anti-bias training is made up of 7 sessions spread out over the semester. Due to the current situation, the training series will begin in digital form. Subsequent dates in May and June will be conducted in person as soon as it is possible to do so.
