Transnational educational careers and social positioning between Brazil and Germany
A qualitative study among migrant families
This study expands the interdisciplinary research focus on transnational families by adding an educational perspective and emphasizes an aspect that has received little previous exploration:
The object of research are courses, strategies and experiences of education in transnational families. Interrelations between spatial and social mobility are examined with a focus on school and educational careers of 'transnational children' between Brazil and Europe. Specific aspects of educational careers that relate to gender and racialisation are also taken into account.
Methods of ethnographic field research following the approach of multi-sited ethnography are used to reconstruct educational careers from the perspectives of family members, actors in educational institutions and migrants' associations.
This will enable us to gain insights into the significance of educational careers for social positioning in transnational social fields and allow us to contribute to a theoretical concept of transnational educational spaces.
