1 April 2025

For this LiDS Lunch Lecture, we have the pleasure of welcoming Brynn Quick, a guest researcher from Macquarie University, who will address a critical issue in healthcare: The monolingual habitus of Australian healthcare policy. Research indicates that linguistic minority patients often face poorer health outcomes compared to their linguistic majority counterparts, largely due to language barriers in communication with healthcare staff.
Brynn will present her exploration of the monolingual habitus prevalent within Australian healthcare policy. Despite the presence of policies that advocate for the utilization of professional medical interpreters, these essential resources are frequently underutilized in practice. Brynn’s in-depth analysis of policies sheds light on the institutional management of linguistic diversity.
The lecture will take place on Thursday, April 24th, from 12:15 to 2:45 PM in Room 213, Von-Melle-Park 8.
This lecture presents an opportunity to engage with important findings and discuss their implications for enhancing communication in healthcare settings. For additional information, please refer to our flyer: Flyer
